The Devil Worm is a worm-like parasite of extraterrestial origin. When humans contract Devil Worms, they are transformed into homicidal mutant zombie-like beings known as the Ridden.
A voice line that went unused for Doctor Rogers mentions the Devil Worm as Pseudotoxocara Pingualuitii. This voice line was initially intended for the Mission The Body Dump. The term Pseudotoxocara is formed by combining pseudo and toxocara, with the latter originating from the Greek word toxon, signifying bow or quiver, and the Latin word caro, signifying flesh, alluding to a type of roundworm. Pingualuitii points to the location where the worm was discovered – the Pingualuit crater in the northern part of Quebec, Canada.
History[]
The parasite that would become known as Devil Worm was first discovered at Pingualuit crater, Quebec, Canada. Samples of the parasite were collected and brought to a lab in Quebec City for study. Somehow, the parasite breached containment, spreading beyond Canada to the United States and then the entire world. As the Ridden created by the parasite outbreak plunged civilization into chaos, the parasite itself gained the moniker "Devil Worm".
