Active Cards are a part of the "roguelike" Card System, featured in Back 4 Blood. These cards allow players to pick various special perks like increasing their damage output or defensive capabilities. The focus of this article is on the cards available for use within the Deck Manager which can be unlocked permanently via Accomplishments, Duffel Bags, and Supply lines. In addition to these cards, players can obtain up to five Legendary Cards temporarily for the remainder of an Act via Legendary Intel Boxes.
The cards that players can use in their Deck Managers can be broken up into four distinctive categories:
The Cleaner Squad should choose Active Cards wisely to counter Corruption Cards picked by the Director.
Players start the Campaign and Trial of the Worm game modes with all 15 cards they pick for their deck. Players will find some active cards across the Missions; generic player cards are free, however, normal player cards cost 500 Copper. Depending on the part of the Act a player is on, they will be granted Catch-up cards. Catch-up cards are only generic cards.
In the Swarm mode, players start with one card at the start of a match. Players can draw up to four cards per round. Card selection is based on the order of the cards placed in a deck. Extra card plays can be earned by finding Supply Boxes scattered around the map. Unlike Campaign, these Supply Boxes requires a Tool Kit to open. Instead of containing Attachments, they contain an Intel Box which grants players a random card from the deck they're using.
There is a total of 191 cards players can use in their Deck Managers in Back 4 Blood:
- 58 Reflex cards
- 54 Discipline cards
- 48 Brawn cards
- 31 Fortune cards
The following 15 cards are always selected by default by the Cleaner bots that accompany the player(s): Well Fed, Needs of the Many, Medical Expert, Amped Up, Inspiring Sacrifice, On Your Mark..., Ammo for All, Silver Bullets, Large Caliber Rounds, Optics Enthusiast, Reload Drills, Hydration Pack, Padded Suit, Bounty Hunter and Marked for Death.
When a player joins an ongoing Mission, they will continue it with that same 15-cards deck if a bot was occupying their intended group slot. However, if they take over a Cleaner, that was previously controlled by another player, they will use the deck and weapons left behind by the previous player until the end of the Mission. After completing the current Mission or restarting it by consuming a Continue, players who joined in progress can choose any available Cleaner, with personally selected card decks in the character selection screen.
The vast majority of cards (185 out of 191) can be encountered during a Mission. The only exceptions are the following six cards: Ammo Scavenger, Copper Scavenger, Offensive Scavenger, Support Scavenger, Utility Scavenger, and Weapon Scavenger. Unlike these six cards, Food Scavenger and other similar cards allow players to ping sensed items through walls. Additionally, these six cards only provide two effects: item sensing and adding extra items.
